'Amazing' audition turnout anticipated for Summer School show

The team at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre are expecting to be very busy next month when auditions open for a brand new Summer School musical.

Aspiring young performers are being urged to make sure they take up their opportunity to star in Stafford Gatehouse Theatre's amateur youth theatre production of the West End classic, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colours comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable.

Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged.

He is purchased by Potiphar, where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers (having suffered greatly) unknowingly find themselves grovelling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognise. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel.

In addition to rehearsing the show, the lucky youngsters will also take part in workshops covering all they need to know about the theatrical world.

"The auditions are a fun day and a chance for young performers to participate in a range of theatrical workshops covering acting, singing and dancing" commented Producer Derrick Gask.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for the successful youngsters to work with a professional creative team and participate in a fun-filled musical on the Gatehouse stage. What's more, we've wanted to stage Joseph as our Summer School musical for a number of years now, so to have the opportunity to produce this amazing show in 2017 is a very exciting prospect" concluded Gask.

The only way to gain a place in the show is to attend the open auditions. Places are available for youngsters aged between 7 and 18 who live in or attend a school in Staffordshire. Previous years have seen up to 150 children battle it out for one of the lucky spaces in recent productions, which have included: Loserville, The Wizard of Oz, Doctor Dolittle, Whistle Down the Wind and Peter Pan. Indeed, this year's production is expected to be extremely popular.

Auditions take place on Sunday 7th May at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre. The first session is at 9.30am for 7-12 year olds, followed by a session at 2pm for 13 - 18 year olds.

Parents of auditionees will need to have in place at the time of the audition a valid enhanced DBS licence* (dated within the last three years).

*Please note this is non-refundable
