A record 3,500 runners could be lining up for the Stafford Half Marathon next year

A record 3,500 runners could be lining up for the Stafford Half Marathon next year.

Organisers have increased the capacity of the event with an extra 500 spaces available when entries open from noon this Tuesday (3 November).

And people are being urged to book their slot early as all the places are expected to go in record quick time. The Borough Council run event takes place on Sunday 20 March 2016 with a start time of 10am and each participant will receive a medal along with a running t-shirt.

Runners must enter online at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/halfmarathon.

Councillor Mike Smith, Cabinet Member for Leisure and former half marathon competitor, said: "If you do want to take part please make sure you get your entry in quickly because the popularity of this event just keeps on growing year on year. "It is now rightly seen as one of the top races in the county's sporting calendar - and is a useful race in the build-up for anyone competing in the London Marathon the following month."

He added: "It is a tribute to the organisation and quality of this race that after all these years it is proving more attractive to athletes and competitors than it ever has and we expect this will be our largest ever field."

Crowds, including local community groups and school children, line the 13.1 mile route to cheer on the runners.

Entry for this year's event will be closed when the capacity is reached. As part of the Stafford Half Marathon event programme the Fun Run will also take place in the town centre on the same day. More details about how to enter the fun run will be made available soon.
